Milner said she did not accompany Renaud to the hospital because Renaud was upset. She said the bilingual Renaud spoke French as a first language. Therefore, Milner decided that it would be better for Renaud’s sister ~— a medical doctor from Montreal — to accompany Renaiid to the hospital. By . doing so, Renaud's sister ‘could translate Renaud’s . French and speak on a med- : ical level with doctors. Milner maintains she was not even. Renaud’s midwife — another North Vancouver woman was in charge. Milner. was only there to help and did not have a contract with Renaud. ; _ Milner said “medication” given to Renaud is not con- o 3 , 2. 2 CBC EVEN nc ee ee TO ns N NNR CY €& sidered medication under the Pharmacy Act. “It's like drinking orange pekoe tea and saying it is medication.” She added she did not give Renaud any medication. Milner maintains that she’s a scapegoat. Renaud, Milner said, knew the risks of birthing at home and must be responsible for her deci- sion. Renaud, however, stands by the facts as outlined in the RNABC report. However, she said she still supports midwifery. “You can't judge the profession of midwifery knowing what happened to _ me,” she said. “It wouldn’t be meanwhile, rejected RNABC contentions that she should not have administered a local anaes- thetic to another woman and sutured her episiotemy after stitches had fallen out. Nurses don’t perform those functions, but mid- wives do, said Milner. The RNAEC charged that Milner brushed aside the patient's contention the incision was infected and did not recom- mend the p#tient seek other assistance. Milner said she offered to call the woman's doctor, but the woman declined the offer. Milner has written and passed the midwifery licens- ing exam in Washington State, but the licence applica- tion has been put on hold _ until the Renaud case has been closed. . She has an associate degree in nursing from Dougias Coliege and post- basic in obstetrical nursing from BCIT.
