ON THE OTHER HAND A MAN in Toronto applied for Canadian citizenship last July and is still waiting for a . decision. Which is unusual. Ottawa admits his application is “fauidess,” but officiats say they | will do their best to see it is not approved, Meanwhile, newspapers from coast to coast have huffed and puffed against him. The man in question is Ernst Zundel, a German who has been in ’ this country since 1958. : . His problem is that he is not popular with groups like B'Nai Brith and the Canadian Jewish Congress. They not only oppose his becoming a citizen. They want him thrown out of the country. It is true, of course, that he reveres the memory of Adolf Hitler WEST VANCOUVER Police pre- vented a 32-year-old, Burnaby man from. jumping off the, Lions Gate Bridge on Jan. 9.. i The incident occurred at approx- imately 12:30 a.m. The man, who “ was leaning over the bridge railing, was pulled to safety by police offi- and believes that the Nazis didn't start the war. Ne | also believes that our “war crimes” were as gross as theirs..On these and many other matters he's round the bend. But there are plency of citizens — new and old -—— who revere memory of Stalin, They are round the bend, too, but are accepted. Logically, there are other things wrong with denying Zundel citizen- ship. The first is that he has commit ted no crime, He was charged with “spreading false news” --- holo- saust denial, ete. — bul eventually got that ridiculous rubric struck off the books. i He and his tawyer, Doug Christie, deserve medals for that, Who doesn't spread false news, ‘including his critics? Secondly, crooks and con men gifore have little trouble crossing our sacred borders. [t's part of our “humanitarian” immigration pack- age. [t's not even possible to cross- examine “refugees” when they apply for status, and thousands “about whom we know nothing have become citizens. Only recentiy, Ottawa told 8,000 people they could stay here even though their refugee applications have been rejected. Call it our 15th ammesty program. And do you remember General Dang Van Quang? The news reports described him as “one. of South Vietnam’s most corrupt offi- cials — a heroin trafficker, black marketeer, gold smuggler and all- round villain.” Quang arrived here in 1973. The cers and was transported to Lions Gate Hospital for observation. Meanwhile, two hours later, police recovered a stolen 1990 Olds Cutlass while conducting a routine hi minister for immigration, Robert Andras. gave him a ministerial per- mit to stay. And if he’s still breath- ing | would bet he is now a citizen. In 1986 there was a real corker. Abraham Finkel was admitted by Gerry Weiner, who was then the junior immigration minister. The case involved bare-faced twisting of the rules and got front- page treatment in the Globe & Mail. Finkel had been refused landed immigrant stitus by three previous ministers because he had more than 20 criminal convictions in Belgium, Germany and Israel, one of which vas for robbery with violence. The ministers had been under pressure from Montreal's Jewish conmnunity to be nice to him, But us the Globe pul it, “they steadfast- ly refused to countermand the advice of high-level bureaucrats ... who strongly recommended that Finkel be ordered to leave Canada Weiner got the same advice. His boy was inadmissable under the Immigration Act. No ifs, ands or buts. When the story hit the press, Weiner didn't budge. “Tam the minister now and | make the decisions,” he said. ° With its eye on those Montreal pressures, the lickspittle Tory cabi- net went along with him. Needless to say, no Opposition MP raised a voice in protest. Once again, I would bet that Finkel is now a citi- zen. T confronted Weiner with all this during the Great Debate on immigration held in North Vancouver in 1988. Jump man rescued on bridge drinking and driving roadblock in the 6400-block of the Upper Levels Highway. . Two Surrey men were. arrested and face charges. "COMPLETE TRANSMISSION SERVICE ‘reportedly His excuse was that Finkel had been ina concentration camp. So what? ‘Then there's the case of Filipina fugitive Dewey Go Dee, although it does not invelve citizenship. Not yet, anyway. A Marcos man, he’s amted in the Philippines on 175 charges of fraud and economic sabotage. Yet in 12 years we haven't been able to deport him. It he gets to stay, be too will become a citizen, Zundel, in contrast. is guilty only of saying the wrong things. Yet even the usually bold Torunta’ Sun weiter Christie Blatchford did a story over which the headline read: + zen Zundel? No Way.” Listen, dear Miss Blatchford and others. The war is over, Adolf. Hitler has been dead for 50 years, “neo-Nazis® ure far less of a threat . than communists now masquerade - ing as democrats, and pressure groups should not dictate who g gets to become a citizen, When is Ottawa going to run a level playing field?
