Sunday, November 6, 1994 - North Shore News - 27 ~~ STORIES WHO TO CALL: Fashion Editor Layne Christensen 985-2131 (118) DESIGNERS HAVE gone soft in the cold weather. They drape clothing for work and weekend in soft, touchable fabrics. They prefer to layer lighter knits and weaves together for warmth rather than to make more structured separates from heavy winter-weight materials. Suiting is designed in everything that drapes — fuzzy wools and nubbly viscose to smooth rayon and textured silk. Adding to the super-soft lock, sweaters are layered beneath jackets and over skirts or trousers. Turtlenecks, cardigans, knitted vests and tunics slide over each other in colors that complement the suit. Even the sweaters are of softer, more relaxed construction. Shoulders have little or no padding. Shoulder seams fall down the arm ending in extra-long sleeves. Necklines often look “unfinished” with rolled collars and loose crew necks, Waistbands and cuffs hang freely or are nonexistant. However, the rich surface interest —- and the lack of novelty patterns and gimmicky themes seen previously —~ makes these sweaters dressy and sophisticated. Curly mohair, fluffy angora and lambswool and linen/cotton blends are in deep multi-colors, heathered - looks and pale winter pastels. Right about now, if you feel like your work image needs a soft touch, slide angora under your tweed and pull an unstructured jacket over your classic cable knits. B.J.’s of West Van knows how to put softness into a wardrobe. Though the store is known for its overwhelming amount of stock, it has managed to cut through the season's clutter and select only those pieces that wilt add dimension to an outfit. The designer labels B.J.s has chosen for winter have all been based on the same list of priorities: > to give a soft update to the clothes you already own; % to be wearable right through winter and into next spring; w look timeless enough to be an investment: and to be reasonably priced. Lines including Peter Nygard, Jones New York, JAX, Studio J. for JAX and K. Steilmann are carried. These labels may be thought of as practical wardrobe builders but the dust-collecting closet basics usually associated with the word “practical” are nowhere to be found. The store puirs these lines with popular labels such as Segrets, Marci Lipman and Eagles Eye. Casually sophisticated suits and separates like the ones photographed here layer color, proportion, unique fabrics and fine details. A Peter Nygard pale-blue, fussy wool jacket is worn with an angora/fambswooi blue and white tunic, and pale blue virgin wool stirrup pants by Jones New York.
