Liberal candidates to debate

TWO OF three Gordons
seeking the-leadership of the
B.C. Liberal Party will
pitch their political plat-
forms in North Vancouver
on Saturday, June 12.

Gordon Gibson Jr. and current
Liberal leader Gordon Wilson will
attend a North Van-
couver-Lonsdale Liberal leader -
ship forum at a breakfast meeting
at the Coach House Inn, 700 Old
Lillooet Rd. in North Vancouver.

The third Gordon in the lead-
ership race, Vancouver Mayor
‘Gordon Campbell, and

Richmond-Steveston Liberal MLA
Allan Warnke will present their
platforms at a later date.

Gibson led the Liberal party in
the legislature from 1974 to 1979.
Wilscn called the leadership con-
test this spring and is secking to
retain his job.

The leadership convention will
be held this September.

West Vancouver-Capilano Lib-
eral MLA Jeremy Dalton and
North Vancouver-Seymous Liber-
al MLA Daniel Jarvis will also at-
tend the meeting.

The breakfast meeting starts at
9 a.m. and is open to the general
public,

when calculating floor areas
for single-famil, houses.

The change, which received pre-
liminary approval on Monday,
May 17, would reverse part of a
1991 bylaw designed to combat
“‘monster™’ houses.

Coun. Rod Clark said: ‘if we
design the bylaw correetly, | don’t
think we'll have any impact with
respect to building mass.”’

He said it was a question of
equity, because other Lower
Mainland municipalities exclude
basements from floor area caleu-
lations.

Said Coun. Barbara Perrault,
“in my own home, | don’t know
what we would do without the
basement. If you provide a base-
ment area, there's less building
mass.”

‘The move came in response to a
request from Grand Boulevard
area resident Angelo Cusano, who
wants to build a recreation room
in the basement of a new house.

He said a_ larger basement
would not affect the height of the
house.
