On major routes, the regular passenger fares will go up 25 cents. Car fares will go up 50 cents, commercial vehicle fares will go up 15 cents a foot, and bus fares will be raised 10 cents a foot. The new fare for overheight vehicles will be $23 — a 50-cent increase for a one-way izip. The cost of a ferry trip for car and driver, between the Mainland and Vancouver Island, will rise to $22.50 per one-way trip from the present $21.75. Rates on the Sunshine Coast will also be raised to $22.50 per round trip from the present $21.75. On the corporation’s minor Gulf Island routes, the regular passen- ger fare will increase an average of 15 cents. BC Ferries’ 1990 fare brochure, listing all the fares for their 24 routes, will be avaiiable at BC Fer- ries offices, on board vessels, and at major information centres. Che, . Minister of National Health and Welfare Perrin Beatty recently announced that effective this month, the federal government family allowances, paid mon- thly for children under age 18, will rise to $33.33 from $32.74 in most provinces and in the territories. The increase is based on changes in the Consumer Price Index, Statistic Canada’s cost-of-living measure, in excess of three per cent. Under a provision in the Family Allowance Act, a provincial government may ask the federal govern ment to vary the rates payable in that province ac cording to the age or number of children in a family or both, providing that the average monthly paymen in that province equals the federal rate. This optior has been chosen by Alberta and Quebec. The refundable Child Tax Credit for the 1989 taxa tion year will provide up to $565 per child based o: family income. Also, parents who qualify can clain an additional $200 on their return for each child age six and under for whum no child care expenses were claimed.
