28 - Friday, December 9, 1988 - North Shore News Blood donors needed urgently THE RED Cross is launching a major drive to bring in blood donors in the critical period before Christmas. “We are starting December without the safety margin required to insure there is no blood short- age. All the blood donor clinics in December will have to exceed their targets if we are to avoid a major shortage before the end of ’88,’" says Len Lifchus, director of biood donor recruitment for the Red Cross. “*The Red Cross is asking ‘people to give the gift of life for Christmas,’’ he said. ‘We're ap- pealing to the media to help us get the word out through public ser- vice announcements and news stories.” Blood donor clinics on th North Shore will be held at the fol-_ ; lowing locations and times. © Monday and Tuesday, Dec. 12 and 13 from 2 to 8 p.m. at Lions Gate Hospital, Medical Day Centre, 200 E. 15th St., North Vancouver. ® Thursday, Dec. 29 from 2 to 8 p.m. at West Vancouver Recre- ation Centre, 780 - 22nd St. ¢ Friday, Dec. 30 from 2 to 8 p.m. at Lynn Valley Centre, 1199 Lynn Valley Rd., North Van- couver. ° Friday, Dec. 30 from 2 to 8 p.m. at Capilano Mall, North East Fashion Mall, 935 Marine Dr., North Vancouver. The Christmas period is always a difficult one for blood collection because of holidays and the other demands on people’s time. Last January the Red Cress had its first critical shortage in two years because it went into the Christmas period without the necessary backlog cf blood donations, said Lifchus. While Christmas is a time of giv- ing, in B.C. more people receive the gift of life than give it. This fact was pointed out by Lifchus: *“We estimate that 540,000 people received blood products last year, yet only approximately 70,00C people donated blood.
