the driving force behind the Secret
Garden.

This manufacturing company is
the product of their 10 years of
experience in the giftware business,
during which time they designed
and marketed prize-winning gift
items.

Four years ago they launched
the Secret Garden line in response
to a need for scented, luxuriously
feminine gift items and accessories
which could make a woman of any
age feel =pecial.

Working out of their bustling
Spadina Avenue warehouse in
Toronto and surrounded by pack-
ing cases of finished orders waiting
to be shipped, the Golds agree that
success has been a challenge.

Success depends on keeping
ahead of a demanding and ever-
changing market place and the
development of new products is
therefore of primary importance,

“Our inspiration comes from
travelling, sourcing new markets,
new fabrics and new fashion
trends.

The sisters began with lace and
satin sachets of all colors and
shapes, and expanded their line to
include such products as scented
satin cushions, scented stationery,
Victorian lace lingerie bags, lace
organizers and satin pillow cases.

“it's not a contradiction for a
modern woman to love a piece of
lace,”’ said the Golds.

With sales in 1986 estimated at
$2 million, the Golds proved that
success occurs when people
understand the needs of the market
place.

Future plans include creating a
line of clothing accessories, in-
cluding belts and brocade weekend
bags, reminiscent of another era.
Already fanciful costume jewelry,
lace and cotton collars and pure
white lingerie are the newest addi-
tions to the Sccret Garden fine.

Watson, a 30-year-old veteran of
the fashion industry in Canada
recently created Classics Only, a
merchandising company specializ-
ing in the shirtwaist dress for its
launch to the consumer.

Watson said he chose the shirt-
waist dress style because of its ver-
satility and ability to transcend
trends.

Three different shirtwaist styles
in a variety of quality fabrics are
offered in the Classics Only
mail-order brochure.

“By selling directly to the con-
sumer, we can offer value and
quality at prices that run about 30
per cent less than retail prices,’’
says Watson, designer and -presi-
dent.
