Fi neae te i mndrepene mae e pee Sate Be Dear Editor: In your editorial of Dec, 8, you very prudently cau- tion the citizens of the North Shore to ‘‘not shoot the pianist... he’s still striving to play your tune,’’? as you argue support for municipal councils raising our taxes. Argument is made in your column that indeed much of the reason for the increase is beyond councils’ control, including factors such as in- flation and cuts from senior government grants. Coun- cils, you propose ‘therefore, have the need to increase our taxes without asking our opinion through referenda, because they have been faced with financial realities, and political responsibilities. Such. advice, it seems to me, is logically sound and responsible. Does that logic not apply to our school system as well? Similar to our municipalities, fixed costs have also increased for our schools. In addition, government support has significantly decreased, and our enrolment has stabilized. Does it not, therefore, follow that school district * ported oard should cali own tune trustees should also be sup- in asking, for in- creases in funding? Trustees must also look after the ‘physical assets’’ of the community. Those physical assets are not just buildings, but they are our young people. Trustees, therefore, should be allowed to raise revenue if they deem it necessary. Similar to their council colleagues, they should have that right without referenda, and they should have the respect from the community when they seek it from us,-or from the provincial government. orld hunger is a year-round problem Dear Editor: It is generous of the News to donate an advertisement for the cause of the North Van Christmas Bureau and the West Van Santa Claus Fund. The call for food or a cheque to either charity to assist ‘‘over 1,700 North Shore families who will go without Christmas this year unless we help’’ will surely be answered by those of us who take a full table for Count your | blessings "Dear Editor: | Christmas is here and it should serve to remind us of all the blessings we in Canada should be grateful and thankful for. If we could only. see the conditions in many other countries of our world, we would be bet- ter able to measure the ex- tent of our blessings. What better way to dem- onstrate love than to make it possible for a blind person to see. For a $25 donation to Operation Eyesight Univer- f sal, this miracle can be ac- complished, Eyesight is a very small Ca- nadian charity involved in sight restoration and blind- ness prevention ‘projects in 17 countries of the Develop- ing World. In addition you will expe- rience great joy when you are the recipient of a patient identification card, showing you the name, age, sex and address of the person to whom you have given this priceless gift of sight. You will also receive a receipt for income tax purposes. Thousands are waiting and hoping for cataract surgery. Your $25 donation will pay for surgery, drugs, hospitalization, food, glasses and follow-up care for a pa- tient. Please help at least one of these needy people return to a useful self-supporting life. Donations may be sent to Operation Eyesight Univer- sal, P.O. Box 123, Station “M", Calgary, Alberta T2P 2H6. Alta R. McCauley Calgary, Alberta Operation § granted. In answering the call for help we must ask how the poor survive the other 364 days a year. Why is it that Christmas appeals and food bank line ups are our answer to the needy? B.C. still has 40,000 fewer jobs than in 198! and welfare rates have not been increased for three years. Hunger hurts as much in January as it does on Dec. 25. . Rather than being the means for surviving one more day, Christmas appeals should be a bonus for “the needy'’, We should’ expect and we must demand that our government ‘ eliminate the need to beg for food.
