B4 - Wednesday, November 16, 1983 - North Shore News LOOKING AT INSURANCE Common sense is best policy — By MARILYNNE A. KING I] GUESS LIFE insurance companies have been ublishing and distributing ooklets on nutrition, exer- cise and general health maintenance for 50 and more years. Every time I see one of these I still think about how nice it 1s to be able to do something in your own cor- rate self-interest that 1s eneficial to everyone else. Life insurance companies hike to see people stay healthy and live longer. When they do, the companies can use pohcyowners’ money longer to make more money; when policyowners’ funds make more money, this benefits all policyowners (of mutual companies especially), since company carnings are partly distmbuted to polheyowners ino the fomm of dividends Also, better mortality figures eventually mean a lowering, TAXES AND YOUR INVESTMENTS Merrill bynach Canada Inc of premium rates, simply because people live longer to pay more premiums. I'm fully aware that if you set out to make a list of businesses that are perfect in every respect, you'll wind up with a wonderfully clean piece of paper. And the life insurance business has its share of faults too, of course. I imagine people are still being sold greater amounts of insurance cdverage than thev logically should have; other individuals probably wind up with policies that are inap- propmiate for their sttuations. Such errors are not always deliberate; they can result from a lack of expertise, too much haste in assessing a situation, or inadequate in formation trom the purchaser To assess the value of an agent's life insurance recom mendations, | suggest you fet common sense be your guide Ask why the specific policy is recommended why this amount 1s considered necessary; the answers should be logical and consistent with the information you give the agent. Most agents today have had a good grounding in analyzing situations and are well able to give advice based on life insurance needs com- bined with = financial = cir- cumstances. But ‘‘caveat emptor’? (let the buyer beware) applies to the pur- chase of life insurance at least as much as it does to our everyday purchases of food, clothing, entertainment, and bigger-ticket items such as cars and homes.
