They have already had
reprieves once, since all of
them were unwanted by
their owners. Fortunately,
they were taken into the care

of North Vancouver's
voluntary animal worker
Doris Orr.

But now time is running
out for them.

The number of animals
given to Mrs. Orr always
exceeds the homes she can
find for them.

“It all comes down to
breeding,” she says. “People
are letting their cats have
kittens which are heading for
the pound. One _ person

who have neglected to have
their animals spayed.”

Christmas is always the
crunch time for her.
Throughout the rest of the
year she receives backup
from a local vet who is
sympathetic with the work
Mrs. Orr carries on and
provides temporary space at
his animal hospital for her
overflow while she is finding
homes.

Without his help, Mrs.
Orr's task would be im-
possible rather than difficult.

But at Christmas, with so
many people going away and
needing care for their pets
over the holiday period, the
local shelters are full of pets
from paying customers and
have no room for Mrs. Orr's
spillover.

“They're going to have to
be put down if they don’t get
homes before Christmas,”

For a while now, she has
had to close her doors to.
taking in any more cats
because of the size of the
problem. ;

“People are phoning me,
asking me to look after their
cats, and I’m having to tell

them they'll have to take .
them to a vet and have them -

put down.”

Now she's faced with the
same problem with several
of the animals already in her
care. ,

“Christmas is not the best
time for animals,” she says.
“By some miracle, for the
past two years they've all got
homes.”

She is desperately hoping
the trend will continue.
