trash big-budget main-
stream cinema from the
platform of, what else, a
big-budget mainstream
movie.

The off colour director of
such paeans to bad taste as
Pecker and Hairspray vids him-
self of all that pent-up anger
and bitterness at anyone who
ever criticized his films, failed
to come up with money for his
films, or refused to go to his
films in Cecil B. DeMented, his
latest offering.

The self-proclaimed Cecil
B. DeMented (Stephen Dorf)
and his crew of guerrilla film-
makers kidnaps spoiled starlet
Honey Whitlock (Melanie
Griffith), forcing her to star in
their zero-budget movie.

After undergoing a painful
Bride-of-Frankenstein
makeover, Honey finds it diffi-
cult to get motivated for a
scene. “How’s this for motiva-
tion?” asks Cecil, zapping her
with a cattle prod.

Tf you think that’s fair
penance for Honey's bad act-
ing and insufferable movie star
attitude, read on. If you think
it’s in bad taste, go join the
queue for Autumn in New
Tork because Demented isn’t
for you.

The film manages to insult
everyone, from multiplex
movie patrons, wringing their
hankies watching Patch
Adams, to indie film fans, who
believe “technique is merely
failed style.”

Cecil B. Demented is full of
gems like these, and only the
most savvy cinephile will catch
all the insider references to the
movie industry, and to direc-
tors Otto Preminger, Pedro
Almodovar and Samuel Fulter.

Each member of Cecil's
crew has a director's name tat-
toved on his flesh. They’ve
pledged celibacy until the film
wraps. They shout slogans like
“Hey, hey, MPAA, how many
movies did you censor today?”
and are willing to die for
Cecil's cinematic vision.

With no budget and armed
with guns and a camera, Cecil
and his crew ambush real peo-
ple on the streets of Baltimore
and force them to be in the
movie. “Look at the camera
and mess up the shot, and you
die,” barks the maniacal Cecil.

it isn’t long before Cecil
garners a cult following, and

Honey finds a new generation
of fans. She knows a good
thing when she sees it: Honey
quickSy comes around to
Ceeil’s way of thinking, and
attacks her role with gusto.

The kidnapping scenario is
a more-than-passing nod to
the experience of Patty (now
Patricia) Hearst, who has a
small part in Waters’ movie.
Waters continues to give
Hearst parts in his movies
despite, or maybe because of
the fact, that she is a consis-
tendy cerrible actor.

Faring better is Alicia Witt,
formerly of the TV show
Cybill, who is hilarious as
Cecil's porn-ster girlfriend.
Dorl¥ manages to avoid the
easy way Out — a crazed oori-
cature — and maintains Ceci!’s
manic intensity even when th:
film lags during its second half.
Griffith bravely jumps into the
role of a 40ish famous: but-
famously-bad actress, and
looks like she would have
gladly taken the part for free.

Ie’s not for everyone, but
Waters fare never is. If you go,
don’t miss the opening cre its:
Waters pokes fun at
Hollywood via old marquee
lettering, with a cool sampling
of old scores with menacing,
house music as backdrop.

Clever, vulgar, and cheer-
fully self-deprecating, Cecil B.
Demented is a prophetic look
at what will happen when the
people rise up and decide they
just can’t stomach another
Star Trek sequel.
