Les Rimes is the president of othe West Vancouver Seniors’ Stamp Club. He's been collecting rare and unusual stamps tor 68 years, many of them related to his area of expertise. Rimes didn’t particularly want to do it anymore, but he faced a challenge in find- ing someone to pass the col- lection to, who would con- tinue to add to it. “Damn it all, at 8¢ [I’m getting co a point where I'd rather just sit on my fanny.” His hope was that the col- lection would find a home with someone who would understand its value: senti- mental and unusual, but not worth a lot of money. Chelsey Allen is 12 years old. She, resident. Four weeks ago she was holidaying in Toronto with her family. “She had severe thirsc, and was cating and cating, but not gaining any weight,” said her mother Cheryl Mackinnon. She was also extremely tired and irritable. “I chought it was a growth spurt combined with puberty. Now she gets insulin twice a day and has to have her blood tested four times a day.” The diagnosis has com- pletely changed their lives. “You don’t realize how your life changes ... the adjustments you make, to diet, to schedule. We’re liv- ing in two-hour increments,” said MacKinnon. They turned to the CDA, not only for services, but for’ moral and emotional support as well. The association decided to give Rimes’ stamp collec- tion to Allen: It’s a gift of support from another who is dealing with diabetes, and a hobby tor her to.focus on while she adjusts to the changes in her life. The two recently met and Rimes went through the col- lection with her, explaining the history of the stamps and process involved in finding them. Allen is looking forward to adding to it. “My grandpa is going to help me,” she said quietly. “He’s going to take me to .the stamp shop Mr. Rimes told us about.” .
