I subscribe, you
understand, to six
Newspapers, including the
Manchester Guardian and
Granma, the Cuban paper
(for ‘‘balance’’). Half a
dozen magazines arrive in my
mailbox every month, some
of them every week, offering
me cameras and clocks and
luggage if I take out another
subscription.

J get a lot of seemingly ran-
dom material that isn’t ran-
dom at alf. Color pictures of
apes bound in straps with
electrodes stitched into their
scalp. An ultra-sound
“photo” of a fetus reacting
to destruction. And now and
then a mysterious xerox of a
stery happening in sone
country far away, that I
should somehow care about.

1 do, of course. 1 care
about everything. Just like
you do.

But having been in the
news game longer than most
of the world’s population has
been alive, } naturally attract
my share of press releases,
threatening notes, upscale
travel mags, thoughtful let-
ters, moving letters, challeng-
ing letters, letters expressing
how disappointed they are
with me, love letters, un-
solicited brochures, pro-
paganda sheets, and invita-
tions to go out and get com-
pletely crazy.

Lots of those. Civic ban-
quets on luxury ships.
Business luncheons with an
MP appearing. Grand open-
ings of public extravaganzas.
Protests. Theatre. Consular
activities. Corporate in-
augurations. Gurus in town.
Astronauts passing through.
People who've just written a

book.

There’s always great food.
Who would come otherwise?
Drinks. Familiar faces. And
