12 + Sunday, April 11, 1999 - North Shore News Liquor law changes lambasted by council Katharine Hamer Contributing Writer IF the provincial gov- ernment is going to start playing around with liquor licensing laws, West Vancouver councillors want to join the game. At “Tuesday's West Vancouver council: mecting, Coun, Allan Williams poured scomm on provincial plans to relax liquor licensing across B.C. without consulting local comnuunities. He informed council of a report recently commissioned by the provincial government which contains proposals for potential changes in the “mer- chandising”™ = of — liquor. Municipal representatives, said Williams, had not been con- sulted about these changes. “As is becoming usual, municipalities are not invited to meetings (on proposed changes),” he said. “Wese Vancouver possesses no objection to the (current) sales of Siquer in restaurants and so on,” said Williams, w si vanceuver District Council “but this government is taking amajor step forward towards expanding the nuntber of licences issued, expanding seating, and lengthening opening hours. Its of great concern to police. (When puly close} chev'll just dump every: body on the street. “That's when troubles begin. “The government — in Victoria scems to believe that items which affect government ara municipal level should not involve the municipalitics,” he said. “The Union of B.C. Municipalities (of which West Vancouver is a) member) opposes changes thar timnit municipal government input.” Williams said that West Vancouver would like to see 3 one-year mortoriuny on new liquor Licences and to have the school board retain the power of veto. “I'm not sure that local cit- izens understand what the goverament is trying to do,” said Coun. Victor Durman. “It's amazing to think that the people invalved ino the pub hicensing referendum have been swept aside. “The government wants te extend opening hours until + a.m. There will be people par- tving right out in the street. The government is saving that the only reason for reviewing hquor licensing policy is to get nid of red une, but the reality is, they're more concerned with the size of TV monitors in pubs. “Tt seems,” Durman con: tinued, “that the government is just trying to) sell more liquer so they can make more money, It’s ike (Premier Glen Clark’s twalvement) with gambling. [ hope this sinks the NDP government just like thar did.” West Vancouver currently has three liquor stores and three pubs: Jake & Ebwood’s at Park = Rovai; The Squarerigger in’ Ambleside, and ‘The Troller in. Horseshoe Bay. Proposals ta establish a public house in Dundarave have consistently been rejected by council members, who fear large numbers of beer-swilling hooligans spilling out on to quiet streets at closing time.
