comes a new Lada sedan
called the 2110, replacine the
Samara.

It’s already on sale in
Russia and Europe and is
expected to get here in the
Winter or Spring. For the
first time, a driver’s airbag
will be offered, and such
comforts as air-conditioning,
automatic transmission and
power windows will also be
offered.

The 2110 sedan will be
followed by a station wagon
model later in 1999.

A couple of two-door
sporty coupes are new to the
market this year.

The © front-wheel-drive
Mercury Cougar with its
“knife-edge” styling is based
on the Ferd Contour plat-
form. It’s available with tour-
or six-cylinder engines, and is
priced from $19,995 for
four-cylinder models to
$24,295 for V6 models.

The new Toyota Camry
Solara coupe, based on the
Camry sedan, also offers four
and six cylinder engines and
is priced from $26,245 to
$33,800.

The indefatigable Ford
Mustang, last redone in
1993, has been restyled with
sharper creases, and both
available V6 and VB engines
have more horsepower. Prices
are not available yet.

In the luxury car class,
there a surprising number of
new and redesigned models.

_ Starting at the tap, there’s
the new Rolis-Royce Silver
Seraph, the first new Rolls in
almost twenty years. It has a
BMW-built 322 horsepower
5.4-litre V12 engine and five-
specd automatic transmis-
ston. Inside are the usual
Connolly [eather seats and
Jambs wool rugs. If you need
to ask the price, well, vou
can’t afford it: $313,625.

bacharged 4.4-litre V8
engine, and sportier styling.

By the way, Volkswagen
now owns Bentley and
BMW owns Rolis-Royce,
but ‘apparently VW has the
rights to the Rolls-Royce
“Spirit of Ecstasy” flying lady
and the Rolls grille design.
Hmm.

Mercedes-Benz flagship
sedan, the S-CLASS, is com-
pletely redesigned for 1999.
To assuage critics who
thought the current S-Class
is too ungainly, the new
model is smaller and lighter,
but will probably have the
same or more interior room.

Tt will offer MB’s new
generation of V8, and later
V12 engines. It’s expected to
arrive in April of 1999.

Mercedes also has a new CLK
convertible model and a new
supercharged engine in the
C230 sedan.

The new Jaguar S-Type
mid-sized luxury sedan,
expected to be on sale next
spring, is a competitor for the
BMW 5-Scries.

The S-Type has retro
styling that mimics jaguar
sedans of the 1960s. It’s
based on a new rear-wheel-
drive platform developed by
Ford (Jsguar’s owner) for the
S-Type and the new Lincoin

The LS will be available
with a V6 engine or a V8
engine, and for the first time
in a long time, will offer a
manual transmission.
