Cell phones at the ready, pedal to the metal. Too bad that speed remains an uncool killer, Driving too fast; driving without proper driver training; driving without manners or common sense — these too are 90s realities, dude. In a recent case on the North Shore, an 18-year-old Vancouver man had his licence suspended for 18 months after he drove a borrowed vehicle at speeds estimated at up to 170 km-h on the Upper Levels Highway. Heavy traffic was no deterrent to such dangerous and_ irresponsible behavior. Nor were posted speed limits of 80 km-h, nor were the multi-car ' pile-ups he so nearly caused. Se: is a real 90s thing, man. Definitely worth licence suspension, but how about much more. How about licence suspension until the driver can prove that he is fit to be behind the wheel of any vehicle? A rigorous testing by the Motor Vehicle Branch that must be passed to get licence and auto insurance back. No matter how long it takes. Speed is deadly. According te ICBC figures, over 35% of all fatal collisions in 1995 resulted from unsafe speed. It bas no place on local highways or local streets. Let’s get rid of it and those who practice it.
