NEW foe construction in
the fast ypiarter of 1996 main-
tained the third quarter pace,
according to the latest figures
issued by Canada Mortgage
and Housing Corporation
(CMHC).

National housing | starts
rose 0.4% to a seasonally
adjusted annual rate (SMR) of
129,300 units from a revised
third quarter rate of 128,800
units. Total housing, starts for
1996 amounted to 124,713
units.

“The new housing market
maintained momentum in the
fast quarter of 1996.” said
CMHC cconomist Michel
Laurence. “Recent increases
in mortgage rates are unlikely
to dampen housing starts
activity significantly.”

In RB.C., construction
starts dropped to 24,600 units
from 32,000 in the third
quarter. Reduced home build-
ing, in the province was in line
with 4 slowing economy, but

aiso relatively high inventories
of newly completed and unoc-
cupied multiple dwellings.
The drop was concentrated
almost exclusively in’ the
volatile multiples market.
