Low Level bike route approved BY ROBERT GALSTER Contributing Writer CYCLISTS cutting across the North Shore will soon have an easier time of it as the construction of a bike route spanning the North Shore has cleared yet another hurdle. This is due. in part, to North Vancouver City coun- cil’s unanimous approval of a motion that will see the con- struction of a bikeway along a portion of Low Level Road. The project takes advan- tage of the Cycling Network Program, a provincial pro- gram that offers to pay half the cost of cycling infrastruc- ture construction on provin- cial and local roads. In a report to council, North Vancouver's bicycle coordinator Emma Dal Santo outlined the particulars of the $420,000 Low Level Road bikeway project. “This path would create a two-way bicycle path on the north side of Low Level Road from Cotton Road for about a kilometre, then cuts its way up.to Alder Lane to bring cyclists back out to Esplanade, stated Dal Santo. ; Although the motion was -passed with littie fanfare, it is representative of Dal Santo's effort to criss-cross the North Shore with bicycle-friendly __ bikeways. According to the Bicycle Master Plan approved in principle by both ‘North Vancouver councils, the Low Level route will eventually ,cornect the first and second narrows’ bridges. _ Dal. Santo’s initial plan ~ Called for the construction of a bikeway along the entire Low Level Road, but her 1995 application to. the provincial government was And you thought your hotel room Was expensive.
