As an example of propane’s -popularity, more than 200,000 » propune-fuelled barbecues are pur- ‘chased by Canadians every year, and on most nice summer days some three million ‘gas barbecues are.in use in Canada. . But, because of their easy-to-use advantages, these and other propane-fuelled appliances are sometimes taken for granted and are not safety checked or maintained the way they should be, - All propane-fuelled appliances, including barbecues, are quick to light, easy to control, fast, practical and come in a variety of sizes and shapes. But they all have one thing in common; they need to be main- tained as well as used and operated in a safe, efficient manner, District of North Vancouver Fire Services offers the following safety tips when using a propane barbe- cue. [Pin doubt, take iUback to the store or dealer or call a qualified propane service technician, On all barbecues, make certain the burner ports are free of rust or dirt and that the burner gas supply throat (the tube connecting the burner) is clear of dust, dirt, and cobwebs, Leak test the propane fittings that run from the tank to the harbe- cue, To do this, make up a solution of dishwashing soap .and water, One cup of water with a tablespoon of scap will do, . With the barbecue connected to the propane cylinder, turn the bar- becue valve off and the tank valve on. Spread the soap solution gener- ously over all hose connections and fittings, and all over the hose. If bubbles appear and then become _larger or more numerous, you have a leak. Never check for leaks with an open flame. If you have a feak, turn off the propane cylinder valve and replace the hose and fittings or have them checked and repaired by a qualified technician. On some barbecues, the male nozzle fitting on the barbecue hose that screws into the propane cylin- der has a rubber “O" ring on the end. If you have this type of barbe- cue, check that ring every time you connect the hose and fitting to a propane cylinder, and replace the “ A « * Keystone @ Allan Block Jr © Cascadia © Pisa Il “O" ting 1 iC appears cracked, torn or outeF round, Lighting and storing a barbecue When lighting any gas barbecue, have the match or lighter already burning with the barbecue tid open before you turn on the gas control valve, Safe barbecue operating prac- tices include: never move the barbe- cue after it has been lit, when fin- ished, turn off the barbecue and the propane cylinder valve; use gas grilly outdoors only: and always store propane cylinders upright and outdoors. Transport and use propane cylin- ders only in upright, vertical pusi- tions, When transporting a cylinder (back from having it Cilled, for example), wedge it into an upright position, make certain it will stay in that position and leave your trunk or vehicle windows open. Whenever a propane cylinder is not attached to an applianoe, the cylinder valve rust be closed and plugged with a POL (Put On Left) plastic plug. As a liquid, propane is i highly compact fuel. It is this energy com- pactness that makes propane so effi- cient to store, transport and use as a pressurized fuct, With the proper information, the public can use it safely.
