Daycare report requested

District Coun. Diana Hut-
chinson requested a status
report Monday night on the
proposed relocation of a
West Vancouver daycare at
2478 Haywood Ave. and
the redevelopment of the
municipally-owned site.
Hutchinson said that council
appears to have lost track of the
issue surrounding the proposed
redevelopment of the daycare site,

which the advisory planning
commission has recommended

continue in its present use.

Council has always maintained
that the daycare would not have
to move until a suitable new site
for it was located.

According to the advisory plan-
ning commission, the land holding
is considered to be an appreciating

Grapes 4 U, to be located at
832 West 15th St., was granted a
business licence by council Mon-
day evening.

The store, which is set to open
next month, will sell wine- and
beer-making kits for between $45
and $65, as well as provide the
space and equipment for custom-
ers to produce and store wine on
the premises.

Service charges for equipment
and space rental, including kit
cost, will run between $77 and
$120 per batch or between $2.50
and $4 per bottle, said business
owner David Skidmore.

The service, which Skidmore's
partner Earl Oldham said is like
having ‘‘a basement away from
home,”’ is primarily targeted at
wine hobbyists who live in apart-
ments or condominiums, with lit-
tle or no space to make wine at
home.

The North Vancouver location
would be the fourth Grapes 4 U
store.

Wine-making store OK’d

Councillors raise concerns over alcohol production

NORTH VANCOUVER City Counci! has approved the
establishment of a do-it-yourself wine-making shop on

West 15th Street at Marine Drive.

The operation's first store was
opened at Robson and Bidwell in
Vancouver last December, a se-
cond was opened in Ladner this
month, and a third is planned to
open in Burnaby in November.

Coun. Stella Jo Dean cast the
lone dissenting vote.

She opposed the opening of the
wine-making shop because of the
odor that she said would come
from the wine-making and bother
the other businesses in the build-
ing.

But Skidmore assured council

any odor that may result from the
fermentation process would not be
detectable from outside the store.

“Our present facility (has) been
around for almost a year now on
Robson,”’ he said.

“There are apartments above it,
and we've had no problem with
odor at all.”

Coun. Barbara Perrault  ex-
pressed concern over the brewing
of beer on the site.

But Skidmore told council while
the store would provide boxed kits
for beer-making, the owners had
‘‘no interest whatsoever in
maunufacturing beer on the
premises.”’
