upport tougher firearms laws Dear Editor: As a member of the Coalition for Gun Control, | would fike to respond to Mike Jehnichen’s letter of May 16. He describes himself as a peace officer, He is obviously not a po- liceman, because if he were he would know that the police are tight behind the aims af the coali- tion, The Canadian Association of Chiefs of Police is a supporting organization and in a January 1993 letter to Wendy Cukier, Chief Borbidge of the Calgary Police said, aware that your group has our full support in its endeavor to address the issue of gun control.” Furthermore, the coalition does not wish to ‘bash’ the law. abiding citizen who is a firearms owner and it has never been the intention to disarm them, The vast majority of Canadian “| wish vou to be, citizens want common-sense legis. lation to prevent the proliferation of firearms, especially rapid fire automatic and semi-automatic guns that have no place in society outside of the military. Jehnichen brings up the often- used argument of anti-gun control extremists of the need for citizens to protect themselves from crimi- nals. They chose to ignore that 80% of all homicides in Canada are be- tween people who know cach other and are caused by domestic violence, arguments, accidents and suicide. Nearly all of the weapons used are legally purchased. If anyone wishes to see the fallacy of his argument and his frightening logic they have only to look south of the border. If more citizens possessing guns really worked, the U.S.A. would have the lowest death rate by Charity begins at home Dear Editor: The other day on the CBC there was an item on a new heart drug t-PA, which, if put into general use, would save the lives of at least 300 more people in this country every year than the pres- ent drug in use. ; The problem, it seems, is the cost: $2,900 for t-PA treatment, as opposed to $400 for the present drug, a total of some $50 million extra per year. And the question was; Can we afford it? Well, maybe we can’t. But remember it’s 300 Canadians we are talking about — 300 Canadian taxpayers, And it seems to me that those 300, or 30, or even just one Ca- nadian, should come first before another dollar is sent out of this country to aid those who are not Canadians. Time enough for them when all the Canadians in need have been looked after. “Charity begins at home” is an old, old saying, but evidently one that bears repeating. Perhaps Mike should move ta Seattle where it is so safe that its citizens stand a 15 times greater chance of being killed by a gun than in Vancouver, He is right in one respect.
