To deny it is to lie; to ignore it, is far worse. By Rod Solar Contributing Writer Discrimination on the basis of color is a reality that transcends all areas of our ‘multi-cultural’ socie- No race has a monopoly on rac- ism. No dimension of our school system escapes its influence. No socio-economic status group is immune from its stench. Contrary to conventional wisdom, racism wreaks in Canada. Even more surprising, the North Shore is the site of intense pre- judice. The following are a few myths that propef racism. These are followed by actual quotes that |, or other trusted sources, have expe- rienced in the last 10 years. Myths (what racists think): All Afro-Americans have rhythm. All Native Indians are alcoholics. All Hispanics have greasy hair. Caucasians can’t jump (or box). All Vietnamese are in youth gangs. All ttalians have connections in organized crime. Ail Hindus work in convenience stores. All Sikhs carry swords. All Japanese are good with money {and math). All Americans are bigots. All Mexicans are lazy bandits. All Irish are hot-headed. All English are snobs. All Colombians are drug smug- glers. Russian ladies are masculine. All Frenchmen are great lovers. All Jews are cheap (and because of this, rich). Afro-Americans own basketball. Caucasians own hockey. Orientals are Yellow. Native In- dians are Red. Afro-Americans are Black. Caucasians are White. Col- or matters. Realities (what racists say and do): A black boy in Grade 6: “Wouldn't you like to run faster; jump higher; jump farther; throw balls farther; fight harder; huh? Wouldn't you really like to be black?” A white boy in Grade 4: “Well, yeah ... f guess so ...’” An Asian man in UBC fourth year: “My most vivid memory from my childhood was hearing a white guy say: ‘All Chinese names sound like a spoon falling down the stairs.’ A teary-eyed East Indian boy in Grade 7 to his elementary school principal: ‘There are some boys throwing rocks and calling me curry-breath, rug-rider, and turban head...” The North Van principal res- ponds with the question: ‘Well, are you indian?” The boy says he is half Indian. The principal says: ‘‘Well, they’re not lying then, are they?” A Caucasian student at UBC, in a letter to the student newspaper: “recent immigrants should wake up (and realize) that Canada ... has developed certain laws and social traditions that are Canadian. (immigrants) should show respect for these laws and traditions, ... if they wish to remain Chinese, East Indian or whatever, LIMPETS CAN BE SEEN CLINGING TO ROCKS AT THE TO FINO FOOD. GIANT PUMPKINS £ HUH S/ CHECK OUT THIS HEAD LETTUCE- reality they should go home because they obviously do not appreciate the general openness and kindness of seal Canadians...” A North Vancouver high school science teacher, in response to a black student’s hurried exit in the middle of class: ‘They sure are weird sometimes, aren’t they?”’ A North Vancouver elementary school gym teacher: “Do you want to know why blacks are so athletic? it’s because they’re always running through the jungle, swinging, and running up and down trees.” A North Vanceuver high school socials teacher to a Hispanic stu- dent who had forgotten © his homework: “It’s always manana tomorrow) for you people, isn’t in’ A now-tetired North Shore high school socials teacher explaining why blacks in America live in ghettos: “It’s obvious that black people are lazy and aren’t as capable or intelligent enough to do something about their predicament.” A North Shore department store imunager in reference to an East indian employee who repeatedly asked about her medical plan: “I can’t stand those ‘pakies,’ those peaple will some day drive me to drink.”” A West Vancouver Canadian- born professional for a foreign- born Canadian professional: “(The problem is) all these damn foreigners taking all the jobs ... and leaving none for real Cana- dians.”” Malcolm Ross, a New Brunswick teacher, writes a book claiming Canada is home to a Jewish con- spiracy, and denies the Holocaust ever happened. . Aryan resistance pamphlets are distributed on the windshields of parked cars at UBC. In the pam- phlets, minorities are blamed for rising crime, poverty, and Jack of affordable housing. James Keegstra, an Alberta teacher, teaches his classes an an- ti-Semitic view of history, rewar- ding his students for praising Hitler in their essays. Not much difference between myth and reality these days, is there? /
