As one of the tap three most popular features people want in the home, these functional and decorative showpieces, with potentially the highest return on investment, are hardly ever used. Fireplaces, without their burn- ing logs, primarily served an aesthetic purpose in the 1970s when the consumer turned to alternate methods for heating ef- ficiency. Now, consumers are entering the 1990s with a realization that the hearth can be both decorative and heat efficient as attention turns to the use of thermal mass stone fireplaces. A fairly old concept which is relatively new to homeowners is radiant thermal mass heating. A heavy stone fireplace absorbs most of the heat produced by each fire and then releases the heat gradually and consistently into the room. High combustion fires, one to three hours in length, provide a great show of flames while heating the stones. Several varieties of fireplaces channel the hot exhaust, produced by the flames, throughout the thermal mass: Russian fireplaces; Kachetofen tile heaters from Central Europe; Grundofen fireplaces, also from Central Europe; and the Finnish Contrafiow. Contraflow is a process that allows flames and hot exhaust to rise upward and then draw downward to floor level along the entire height of the fireplace as cooler exhaust exits out of the fireplace and into the chimney. This allows the heat to be ab- sorbed by the stone through the entire channel. Unlike the constant refueling required by a wood stove, a ther- mal mass stone fireplace needs on- fv wwo fires a day to produce heat for up to 24 hours. The fireplace heats very effi- ciently because the wood burns rapidly and cieanly, resulting in jow emissions and virtually no creosote build-up, Several companies are now manufacturing radiant thermal mass Fireplaces. Stone has been used throughout evolution as an important compo- nent to a warm, lasting fire. Plac- ed at the base of a fire, stones provide excellent ventilation and heat absorption, and radiate heat fong after flames have died down. Brick, tile and stone have been the most common materials used for thermal mass fireplaces, as well as for openfaced fireplace construction. In Scandanavia, Europe and North America, where soapstone was historically available, people recognized soapstone for its heat retaining properties, and used the material for bed warmers and wriddies — and as a refractory medium for use in furnaces and ovens. Soapstone is becoming itereas- ingly popular in the construction of high quality thermal mass stone fireplaces for the same reasons, in addition to its abilty to withstand high temperatures, its workability and its consistent, comfortable release of heat. For aesthetig appeal, thermal Muss soapstone fireplaces are available ina wide variety of designs, unigue adtural stone grain and neutral soft grey hues that compiement any color scheme of decorating style.
