AS 'S well known, the sinister Collins has a world-wide spy
network, and reports come in daily. Only last week there
was a bag of mail from Singapore, detailing how Prime
Minister Lee Kwan Yew (known to the irreverent as
“‘Harry’’) deals with illegal immigrants and others whose

works he views with suspicion.

There's something to be said for
Harry.

The headline in the Straits Times
read: ‘‘House gives go-ahead for
caning all illegal immigrants.”"

The report began this way: ‘‘At
least three strokes of the cane <cnd
three months’ jail — that is what a
foreigner who overstays for more
than 90 days or enters Singapore
illegally will get with the passage
on Thursday of a Bill to give
Singapore's immigration laws
more sting.”’

Pretty neat, ch? More sting.
See?

The Senior Minister of State for
Home Affairs, Dr. Lee Boon
Yang, standing in for Harry, told
the legislators that illegal immigra-
tion was on the rise again. It was
due, he said, to Singapore’s
economic recovery. But he and
Harry weren't about to stand for
it.

“We cannot afford to take a ca-
sual attitude toward this pro-
biem,”' he said.

He explained that there were
penalties in the past for those who
flouted Singapore's immigration
laws, including fines of up to 6,000
Singapore dollars. They weren’t
enough of a deterrent, and Harry
hopes the new measures will be.

Good old Harry, I say, except

The lead to the report went:
“Sikh community leaders were
called up by the police this weck
and warned in no uncertain terms
io refrain from any action that
could cause public disorder and
create tension among Singapore's
different racial and religious
groups."’

The Sikh leaders were informed
that ‘‘their community and con-
gregations at the temples should
not import foreign politics into
Singapore and allow their religious
organizations to get involved in
politics.’’

What set Harry off in this case

was similar to what happened here
after those two Sikh assassins were
hanged for the murder of Prime
Minister Indira Ghandi: prayers in
memory of the killers and public
condemnation of the government
of India.

A Singapore Home Office
statement had it that by placing
advertisements in the press and
‘‘apitating for prayers for the two,
the Sikh leaders were importing the
politics of India into Singapore
under the guise of religion.””

It was stated further that ‘‘the
execution of the two persons has
nothing to do with Singapore and
is not the concern of Singapore or
Singaporeans.**

“Sikhs in Singapore are entitled
to their views, but, as
Singaporeans, they must not by
their actions publicly incite hostile
feelings among people in
Singapore.""

The president of the Central
Sikh Temple stated the militants’
action did not represent the views
of all Sikhs. No more in
memoriam services would be held
and the authorities had done the
right thing, he said.

You bet.

In this country, of course, we
encourage the Sikhs and others to
do their own thing. That's the
meaning of multicult and why we
had dancing in the streets here
when Mrs, Ghandi was murdered.

Let’s hear it for Harry! He may
be a dictator and a rotler to some,
but he has his points @
