MIX AND MATCH TRAVEL Flights to Great Britain becoming more affordable NOT EVERYBODY thinks of it that way, but tourism is a business. Pundits say it is fast becoming the biggest business in the world, but of course all that’s meaningless to the couple from Ker- risdale or the West Van- couver widow who just likes to take a carefree holiday every year. There are people, however, whose business it is to entice as many people as possible to their neck of the woods, and one such chap is a genial Briton called Gareth James, the new Canadian director of the British Tourist Authority. He has just been in Vancouver extolling the joys of travel to Bri- tain, although when he got back to home base in Toronto he would have at least one tale to tell of Vancouver, for it happened that on his first morning here, whiie oul running at 7:15 in the morn- ing, he was given a ticket for jaywalking. Of course that’s the joy of trav- el, that when we spread our wings and forsake our vanilla streets we can encounter coppers who lie in wait for jayjoggers. In Mexico you can drive a bus through a red light at rush hour and nobody cares; here you jog through one soon after dawn and you're in for the high jump. According to James about 600,000 Canadians go to Britain every year, 88 per cent of whom are independent travellers — that is, people who rent a car and go as they please, He would obviously like to see more of us crossing the pond, and he makes the point that) price should vot be a barrier, James, who has just arrived in Canada from Australia, noted that a roundtrip ticket from Toronto to London casts about $500, or roughly a week's wages for the average person. Summer flights from Vancouver to London were about double that this year, but he still has a point at owice the nrice (and don’t overlook winter travel to Europe when fares and everything else costs less, and you're not going for the sun anyway, even in summer). So, says James, we should look at travel to Britain with that perspective. Aha, says you, but what do we live on when we get there? Well, you can stay with Aunt Flo or Cousin George. Yes, you can, but that can be a right pain in the neck, as we’ve found out, because you spend all your time talking about the price of butter and not really seeing what you wanted to see. The answer is not to stay with relatives but to go where you really want to go — Scotland or the Lake District, for example — and tell your relatives where and when you'll be there and they can come and visit. In other words you have made the effort to fly 5,000 miles See Stay Page 40 travel | talk David Wishart PUERTO VALLARTA per $399 «..
