Poor swimmers, only recreational runners and not even owning bikes, Eeva and Liisa, 52, jumped whole-heartedly into training and competing just more than a year ago. Doing their most intensive training in the weeks prior to the Oct. 22 event, the mother and daughter atlowed plenty of time to get used to the climate there before race day. ‘One of the biggest things you have to be careful of. is dehydra- tion,”’ said Eeva. ‘‘If you don’t come from a climate like Hawaii you could be setting yourself up for trouble.”’ With the temperatures, wind and waves taking their toll: on , competitors’ energy during the 2.4-mile ocean swim and the 112- mile bike race, Eeva’s strategy is to conserve energy for the full marathon. For her the toughest part will be the week before the race. ‘*You don't do any training at all — you rest up and eat a lot of car- bohydrates. Not training will be hard.” Players falter im first round THE THREE North Vancouver wildcards Fabio Walker, Josef Brabenec Jr. and Glenn Richards failed to make it past the first round at the Smirnoff Challenger tournament at the Blue Moun- tain Racquet Club in Coquitlam last week.
