29 INCIDENTS IN 1986 Tips help ensure safety with propane barbecues IN| 1986, there were 29 accidents related to propane barbecues in B.C, The 29 incidents in 1986 caused a loss of $97,402 and two injuries. (There was one additional incident of a leaky connection on a por- table propane stove in a church hall which caused $40,000 damage and six injuries.) Here are a few safety tips for the outdoor cooking enthusiasts: * Always locate a barbecue away from any combustible wall; e Check and make sure that con- nections are tight. Leaks can usually be detected by dabbing the ‘joints with soapy water. If bubbles occur, there is a leak that must be corrected; e The pressure relief valve will release propane if the pressure in- side the cylinder becomes too great. Pressure varies according to temperature, regardless of the amount of propane inside. At -42°C (44°F), the propane will stay liquid and there will be no internal pressure. At 15°C (59°F), enough propane vaporizes to create a pressure of 640 kPa (93 Ib./sq.in.) At 38°C (100°F), the pressure would be 1186 kPa (72 Ib/sq.in) and at 74°C (165°F), the pressure relief valve would start to release propane. This valve should never be tampered with; © Cylinders should never be over- filled. When filled to rated capaci- Pavestone ty, there is always a vapor spice feft to allow for expansion of the liquid propane as teniperature varies. Cylinders are filled by weight, so a 20 Tb. cylinder, a common size, would hald 20 tbs. of liquid propane. Some cylinders are equipped with a liquid-fevel bleed valve that indicates when rated capacity has been reached; e Cylinders must always be upright, whether in storage, during transportation or in use. sain Wi { CANADIAN CLOSET This will ensure that in the event of excess pressure, vapor escapes and not liquid propane, which would immediately vaporize, ex- pand 270 times in volume and be 270 times as dangerous as a vapor release; * Cylinders should never be trans- ported, stored or installed ino an enclosed space. In permanent dwellings or recreational vehicles, cylinders must be outside, or in See Cylinders Page 22 | ORGANIZE YOUR CLOSETS | ee © custom snelving and drawers ® mirror closet doors ¢ wire storage systems * wall bed 1093 Marine Dr. N.V. 986-4263 SHOPS SECONDS the “solid choice” Natural $1°%/sq.ft. or 29° ea.
