VETS RETURN
Goodwill visit to Russia
worthwhile -- peace vets

NORMAN HOYE AND HERB CLARK have
returned home again as soldiers fighting for world

peace.

On April 28, the two join-
ed approximately 35 Second
World War veterans and
Veterans for Multi-lateral
Nuclear Disarmament
(VMND) on a tour of the

USSR in hopes of bringing ©

their message of concern for
world peace and an end to the
world nuclear arms race to
their Russian counterparts.

The tour, set up by the
Canada USSR Association
Inc., stopped in Moscow,
Minsk, Leningrad, Kiev, and
Odessa on its 14-day sightsee-
ing and peace secking
mission.

nant in the Canadian Corps
of Signals, says the trip was
extremely worthwhile, “the
Russians accepted our calls
for peace with much
enthusiasm."

According to Clark, Rus-
sian appreciation for the
Canadian veterans’ visit was
shown at each stop along the
tour, its significance to Rus-
sian veterans made evident by
the numbers of high ranking
Russian officers that met the
Canadian veterans at cach
city.

“Each of these officers, all
Second World War veterans,
were terrifically concerned
about world peace,”’ says
Clark. ‘‘They suffered such
terrible losses in that war that
they never ever want to see
that kind of slaughter happen

again.”*

Hoye, a former air force
colonel, says the conse-
quences of war remain so
much more vivid to the Rus-
sians, their victories, so much
more celebrated by its
younger generations than the
younger gencrations of most
western countries: ‘It is the
custom for young brides to
leave their wedding bouquet
on city war memarials. In
this way, Russian young peo-
ple are constantly kept in
touch with the sucrifices
made during the war."

To walk through the mass
graves outside Leningrad
where 460,000 Russians are
buried, 10,000 to a grave.
Hoye says, is to be faced,
once again, with the stagger-
ing price of humanity exacted
by war.

Though both Hoye and
Clark were impressed with
the wmount of Russian

reconstruction and the
thousands upon thousands of
urban apartment blocks that
have sprung from the rubble
of the Second World War,
the two were more struck
with the similarity. of con-
cerns they shared with their
Russian peers.

Says Hoye, “OF course, we
could only get superficial in-
sights into the country in the
two weeks we were there, but
the feeling expressed te us

Both sides, says Clark, suf-
fer from the fear that is seed-
ed and nurtured by distance
