C3- Wednesday. October 19, 1983 - North Shore News Top artists help Kiwanis club raise money By NAOMI LANG LOUIS AND ELIZABETH Fabian are two of the 90 top arusts and craftspeople who will be demonstrating their work at the B.C. Arts and Crafts Fair sponsored by Kiwanis Club of North Vancouver. As it is, they perform the most delicate and com- plicated operations on the decapitated figurines, bat- tered china dolls, shattered vases and chipped chandeliers. When you are replacing porcelain fingers, bird beaks and flower petals only a milli- metre or so long, or restoring a chipped crystal goblet to its Original glinting beauty, pa- tience and skil] go with the territory. But as Elizabeth shows a visitor Before and After pic- tures of some of her work, it is Obvious there is another dimension. She seems to have a positive reverence for the superb craftsmanship of the pieces she repairs and takes infinite pains to ensure her restoration is scrupulously faithful to the originan! concept To hear her tell it, replac- ing a wing for one of the cherubim cavorting among the flowers on an ornate Dresden basket 1s something like supplying a missing note in a prece of music — the NIGHT TRAIN whole thing must be in har- mony. When she reached the Fa- bians’ studio, the antique oriental female figure had only one circlet of flowers in her dark hair, the second one having been broken off and lost. Elizabeth had just finished making a _ replace- ment and although the orna- ment was no bigger than half the nail on her small finger, every tiny petal and every shading of color were reproduced so that it looked identical to the original. ‘*Isn’t she exquisite?’’ said Elizabeth, passing her hand lightly over the pale, delicate face. A giass years, blower for 22 Louis specializes in glass manufacture and repairs. His workshop is equipped with a glass lathe and an electric annealing oven (‘‘both very expensive, but well worth it in the time they save’’) and is filled with distilling apparatus, flasks, syringes, and other custom made items destined for hospitals, universities and laboratories. The repairs for which they are known throughout western Canada and the U.S are the Fabians’ bread and butter but they take time out for a litthe jam too. He is a member of the American § Scientific Glass Blowers Society, and for the last 12 years has taught both scientific and ornamental! glass blowing at night school, most recently under the auspices of the continuing education department of the University of B.C. ‘There is no school of glass blowing in Canada, and only one in the United States so there 1s great interest in the courses, which are hmited to 12 or 15 students,’’ he said.
