OTTAWA - Nationalist sentiment in Quebec has diminished dramatically since the 1980 sovereignty-association referendum, a Council for Canadian Unity poll showed Friday. The poll indicated Quebec Premier Rene Levesue, who lost the referendum by a 60-40 percent margin and has vowed to fight the next provincial election on the sovereighty-association issue, would fair even worse if the referendum were held today. The survey, conducted BERN Switzerland - Switzerland Friday closed the Bern bureau of the Soviet news agency Novosti, ordered its chief correspondent’ expelled and arrested two Swiss employees of the agency for anti-Swiss “subver- sion.” Officials said the Foreign Ministry issued a protest to the Soviet Embassy in Bern, the Swiss capital. Trustee Margot Furke has told the News she will not even give the report any credence by commenting on its contents. She says: “I find = it astonishing it would appear from the covering letter to the attorney-general some specific individuals in the municipality and the MLA are being asked for their comments on a report of a man who lives in Kelowna and who visited the district for 2% days. “If this board comments on Mr. Macklin’s report it is giving it some legitimacy, which it doesn’t deserve.” Furke criticizes Vander Zalm for belittling the school board by bowing to pressures of a lobby group, at a time when the minister had just declared that school boards should have greater autonomy and be left to decide the question of school closures. “I fail to see local autonomy is being respected in this issue,” she comments. As it happens, both Vander Zalm and the school board are named as respondents in a petition filed by 34 parents asking B.C. Supreme Court to declare the proposed school closures invalid. The peittion will be heard in chambers May 9, when the parents will seek a ruling that the decision of closures is beyond the board’s junsdiction. Meanwhile, trustee Furke is angry about the way the whole thing has been handled politically behind the board's back. “We also have an MLA (Wilhams) who has not com- municated with that elgéted body “This board has worked for a year, with a long senes of pubhc meetings If the minister Chooses not to ap prove the school closures 1 can only assume the minister hbelkeves the opinions of special interest groups have more validity than the opi nions of a locally-clected school board and the portion of the community) which contmbuted to that dialogue and the residents who elected the board in the first place “If that ois) what this government considers to be normal perhaps they should the students con- om S oo age) SAY HAPPY MOTHER'S DAY WITH BALLOONS Send Mom a dozen long-stemmed red balloons, or a heart in a box to your sgecial mother Cal us ot do in ton dotatiod whe, 991 Marine Orive, NV 986-8787 ALLO OLED n ; y 2 z ~~, have sent Mr. Macklin in in the first place to make this decision. She sums up her feelings: “T consider it to be an insult to the democratic process.” NDP candidate for the riding Claus Spiekermann, himself a school principal, agrees with her whole- heartedly. “Typical Socred = ar- rogance!”” he exclaims, maintaining that the govern- ment is playing politics with the West Vancouver school system. The irony of Spiekermann and Furke being on the same side of the fence on the issue is that Furke is president of the local Socred = con- stituency association. Yet her current MLA has come in for her criticism for his in- volvement in the affair, she is campaigning for a can- didate who received a copy of the report but did not show it to the school board and she is taking an active role in trying to obtain the re-election of a government whose actions have _ in- furiated her. Furke responds that while she considers her foremost responsibility to be as an elected trustee on the school board, she feels she can back the Socreds on the majority of issues while condemning them on this one. Meanwhile, the Macklin Report leaves a trail of unanswered questions for the school board: eDid Macklin make his recommendations in response to Vander Zalm, or at his own initative? *Will they play any part ina decision by the minister? eWill Vander Zalm be issu- ing a decision on the school closures before election day? elf not, does the Macklin report have any relevance to his successor as education minister if the Socreds make up the next government? Furke acknowledges that all are relevant questions - and concedes that she has no answers lo any of them Co’ y DIET CENTRE North Vancouver 988-0212 136 E. 14th St. For all the years of love.
