Plenty of people do, you know, at a place they euphemistically call ‘the rat race’, ‘the old grind’ or ‘the merry-go-round’; at a place better known by the of- fensively explicit term ‘work’. Why do so many people work at something they detest? Personnel consultant Meg Mitchell said an unhappy work life usually begins when people are at the job hunting stage and they forget the first--and by far the most important--step of their job search: deciding what it really is they want to do for a living. And so, they accept a job they don't want and the years slouch by and they spend the rest of their lives wishing .... “if only...." “According to Mitchell, most people take a hap- hazard approach to finding work. She says they phone a company and ask what jobs are available. Of course, the answer to that type of query is usually ‘none’. These may include how much money you need to make; whether you're a ‘people person’ or one who enjoys working with things; what industries interest you; whether location is important to you or not; in short, the kind of working environment you require to be happy. But there’s a catch: “You have to be honest with yourself or you're not going to be able to sell yourself an interview,” she said. In addition to the usual sources of information like help wanted ads and recruit- ment firms, Mitchell suggested that job hunters visit their local library where they'll find numerous books, trade magazines and journals that describe new developments and op- portunities in any industry they choose.
