There is a gamble involved
in being an income — tax
evader and now Revenue
Canada, Taxation is stacking
-the odds.

It used to be that taxpayers
could cross their fingers and
hope their names were not
Selected by the department’s
auditors. But now the audi-

tors have found. another, -

more effective way of weed-
ing out those taxpayers who

cheat on their tax returns.

In. addition to ‘using the
traditional screening method
in which individual high-risk
taxpayers are selected. for
their potential tax recovery,
the revenue department has
begun to identify wnat it calls

It could be any type of
group, an industry, a profes-
sion, even a_ particular
neighborhood. If the tax
department notices a signifi-
cant lack of compliance. with
tax laws among members of
the group, all members could

come under an audit, on a

national scale if necessary.

Already this new approach
has proved successful within
the scrap metal industry and
is being used on the garment
trade. Thousands of dollars

in taxes have been recovered
