CHILD RESTRAINTS SAVE LIVES

Doctors ensure babies ride home safely

FOR THE third consecutive year, 89 New Year's

province.

The BCMA will present an
infant safety seat to the first
1986 baby born in all B.C.
hospitals where babies are
delivered.

“Many people don’t know
that a safety seat can be ex-
tremely dangerous in an ac-
cident or sudden stop unless
it is installed properly,”’ said
Dr. David Jones, BCMA
Communications Committce
chairman.

CATAPULT CHILD

“The added force of an
improperly secured seat can
catapult a child through a
window or into knobs or
other protrusions, causing
terrible damage to the head
and face,"’ he said.

Less than 20 per cent of
B.C. children under five

years old are properly
restrained in motor vehicles,
according to a 1984
Transport Canada survey.

The most common errors
are failure to fasten the seat
belt around the child seat
and not securing the tether

killed and 590 injured in
motor vehicle accidents in

prevented if more people use
