that got us thrown out in the
eighth round, earning us — or
relegating us to — seventh place
out of 25 corporate teams.

to represent our fine paper in the
bee.

There. were many laughs from
participants throughout the bee

asked to spell ‘‘megalomaniac.””

Moderator Peter Gzowski made
the most of the fact that Jack
Webster was. sitting in the au-
dience. ‘'... Like the way Webster
used to be on television,’’ was
frequently: tacked on to the ends
of definitions (with the notable
exception of the word
“pneumatic”’). ,

Somme of the words were so easy
as to induce groans from not only
fellow participants but audience
members as well.

“The News team was the relieved
recipient of such gifts as ‘‘en-
croachment,”’ ‘“‘scurrilous’’ and
‘“italicization.” ; .

But when things started to get
ugly and. the words became
unrecognizable, we bowed out,
knowing our practical and hard-

A .CHARGE of. possessing a
stolen. television _ belonging to
Kiwanis ‘Towers in North Van-
couver recently netted two men
jail terms.

Colin Scot Simmons, 22, of no
fixed address, and Allan Arvid
Mattson, 19, of North Vancouver,
both pleaded guilty to the charge
stemming from a July 28 incident.

Simmons was jailed nine
months in connection with the
charge.

Mattson was jailed six months.
