io — Sunday, ‘October 17, 1299 ~ North Shore News Fast ferry sewage fle Ship’s system to be repaired Katharine Hamer News Reporter katharinc@nsnews.cont NEWS that the PacifiCat fast ferry has been dumping chemically untreated sewage into the ocean at Horseshoe Bay has only strengthened the resolve of BC Ferries’ opponents. “I can hardly speak,” said Mat Wilcox of CAFTE (Citizens Against Ferry Traffic Expansion). “This is just another symptom of BC Ferries acting too quickly and without thought. They really need a comprehensive plan for their rate of growth.” CAFTE is campaigning to reduce traftic levels at Horseshoe Bay. The group is also concerned about the health and safety of people on the waterfront, said Wilcox. Colleague John Moonen, mean- while, says that perhaps CAFTE should change its acronym to “Citizens Against Ferries Terminating our Environment. “I'd really like to have a sense of pride in our ferry service,” he said, “but they j just go from one problem “to the next.” Since .its launch. in July, the _ PacifiCat has managed to upset both ousted truckers and Bowen island - residents hit by “tsunami” strength wake. ‘Numerous sailings have also beea caficelled because of barnacles on the ferry’s sewage pipe, a broken hydraulic seal, and the immobility of oar . the Pacificat in the face of harbour flotsam. :Clay, Suddaby of BC Ferries said the discharge into - _ Horseshoe Bay was not a usual occurrence. “Suddaby said the ship’s sewage system automatically dis- charges effluent into the water once the tank is full. “That kind of thing doesn’t happen’on regular sailings,” he : ‘said. “But on a holiday weekend, we have a full toad of passen- - gers, and cverybody wants to use the washroom at once — just : before the ship docks.”. : \“We are not dumping raw sewage into the water,” said . Suddaby. “It receives primary treatment. We’re not under any . ‘regulatory obligation to treat sewage at all. But we believe in our responsibility to the environment.” : All of the conventional vessels i in BC Ferries? fleet have firic- 08 OR REFUSAL ¢ | CHARGE? — You only have ive days | a: Did you know that you automatically receive a 90 day “prohibition from driving for being picked up on 08 or : Refusal charges, whether or not you have been convicted. . ‘You Galy have 7 days froin the date that you are {stepped by the Police to appeal your 90 day automatic driving prohibition. © ~ “You ‘nave the right to an experienced lawyer... -One who.can advise you of your options... Primary treatment involves the maceration (cutting up) and aeration of raw sewage “to help the biodegradation process,” said Suddaby. Secondary treatment adds chlorination to the mix, so the sewage is sterilized before being put overboard. There is a secondary treatment facility aboard the PacifiCac, but it doesn’t work. Suddaby said BC Ferries is working “agyres- sively” with both manufacturers and suppliers to resolve the - problem. “We believe it will function as it was intended,” he said. The ferry will continue its regular sailings in ‘the meantime. Suddaby said it will be going into dry dock within the next few weeks for work on a number of unrelated problems. - PUBLIC REVIEW OF LONSDALE AVENUE TRANSIT PRIORITY STUDY You are invited to participate in a PUBLIC FORUM to be held en "October 26, 1999 ' from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the City Hall Lobby. morth vancouver £ city o systema checks flush footing fy fine. antifeese) * wm CV jcint boot replace: laced 55.00 Cine. parts} 1 65.00 Lube.
