26 — Friday, August 20, 1999 - North Shore News Poet’s voice lingers despite long leash From page 21 premature end at the age of 40. In Willy's case, however, posterity hinges on a bus depat where his entire life’s work is crammed into a locker. There is only one person he feels he can give the key to but he has vet to find his former teacher’s house. Willy is sucking up the final dregs of life’s bottle and time is running out. The generous heart of the narrator comes with much more effort in our species. Willy describes himself as “Santa’s loyal helper. On the other hand, a loudmouthed crank, a nihilist, a besot- ted clown. And the poet? He fell some- where in between | suppose.” He makes a dubious choice of Santa Claus as his role-mode! saint, a saint whose feast was removed from the official Catholic calen- dar in 1969 because St. Nick most likely never existed. But then we don’t choose our destinies. And while Willy accepts his, he encounters a myriad of eccentric “Amerikans” who seem to take excep- tion — including his mother, a holocaust survivor. This book sags a bit in the middle, weighed down by too many memories and the day to day trials of'a dog’s life. The plot zigs and zags like a puppy on a long teash but when Mr. Bones ends up in Virginia (Poe's adoptive home, hmm) events leading to a startling ending are set in motior. For a brief time, Mr. Bones lives in the suburbs with an adoptive family: can- do Dick, diminutive son Tiger with a near-lethal bear hug unequal to his size, 1 sweet Alice and loving mother Polly. Mr. Bones and Polly share a penchant for life’s litle luxuries and as Mr. Bones (with his head gleefully out the mini-van window) reminisces on his time with Willy, he notes that “maybe this was even beater. For the sad truth was that poets didn’t drive, and even when they travelled on foot, they didn’t always know where they were going.” Poets-turned-novelists, such as Auster and Michael Ondaatje, who contributed a back-cover endorsement to Tinmdbukin, are in love with the music of language. Auster, having created a character like Willy, who is as fond of booze as he is of the sound of his own voice, is able to be unfettered. His rants are like the notes in a strange erratic melody which linger ‘long alter the last page of Timbuktu. od & THE SALYATION ARMY |. & caurcn 105 Wese 12th St,, N.Van Hoo, 988-6040 - :Sunday Worship: 10:30am / Sunday School ‘during service CHRISTIAN .
