I often work in an empty harbor, fer- trying passengers back and forth while there is solid gridlock on the roads all around us. Why can’t we use our natural water- ways better with additional marine trans- port? The plan for the new Vancouver Waterfront Convention Center includes a new SeaBus terminal. Could not the existing Vancouver terminal be relocated to an area adjacent to, or to the west of the First Narrows Bridge, build a sizable park and ride, direct West and North Van buses to that terminal and run a new route ro the new Vancouver terminal with two new SeaBuses. Burned by Satan’s fire Land issue needs: mately $12 million, really good value considering that cach SkyTrain car costs around $2 million, and the questionable value for money for the new fast ferries being built, $100 million plus for each. The two existing SeaBuses have proven beyond doubt to be the most dependable form of public transit in the Lower Mainland. The First Narrows Bridge will have to be repaired or replaced. We must provide West Van and points west an alternative to using the bridge. Second Narrows just can’t handle additional traffic and we should be plan- ning for growth in these communities. I just don’t believe the rumor that West Van commuters will not use public transit. When the bridge is down, and we provide an excellent alternative, we will have lock-out loads. In these negotiations, it is fair to suggest, when one side claims compensation for the use of “their” land, that compensation is due to the other side as well, for having made improvements to that be playing with fire — the very — land.
