By Robert Galster Conitributing Writer A renowned architect, Pratt is best known for his work on the B.C. Hydro building in Vancouver. He won honorable mention for the 1957 Massey Award -— the most prestigious architecture award in Canada. Pratt was bom in Boston and came to Canada in 1921. He grad- uated from the University of Toronto in 1938. In his youth he was a distinguished athlete and won a rowing Olympic bronze’ medal for Canada in 1932. As a champion of architecture’s Intemational movement, Pratt focused on the practicality and simplicity of life within a structure. Fred Hollingsworth of North Vancouver cotusidered Pratt a mentor and a friend. He said that while some may say the move- ment is “unemotional in extreme cases,” Pratt was not restrictive in his approach. He later played a part in the development of the West Coast movement which married the Intemational with the Organic styles. “It was taking best parts of both and experimenting,” said DONATIONS OF “OR DELIVER TO The Salvation Army Thrift Store Persian & Oriental Carpets 1 To satisfy court demands for payments | Assets of Long Established Persian & Oriental Carpet Company Will Be Dissolved by PUBLIC AUCTION PARTIAL LIST OF ORIENTAL CARPETS Persian Royal Kirman, Master Weaves, Silk Prayer Rugs, Semi Antique Navahan, Pashima Wool Mauri Bokharas, High Quality Chinese, Tribal Chichako and Baluchies, Indo Kashan, Tabriz, Heriz, Good Quality Aubussons, Runners, Silk and Kurk Wool and Silk Isfahan, Gabeh with natural dyes, Antique Arabil, Zanjan, Khemseh and many, many more. Hollingsworth, who credits Pratt with facilitating and encouraging the evolution by allowing his employees freedom in design. That open-mindedness led to the firm of Thompson, Berwick and Pratt coming to be called a “practical college” not only because there were no architecture schools on Canada’s West Coast, but also because some of the biggest names in architecture got their start there. Among these were Arthur Erickson, Paul Merrick and Ron Thom. During the 1990s, Pratt pursued his life-long hobby of paint- ing watercolors. Pratt is survived by two children, Toni and Peter.
