Hydro rejects WV project

B.C. HYDRO has rejected a grant
application from West Vancouver
District to pay one-third of the
cost of installing underground
power lines in an area being con-
sidered for a beautification pro-
ject.

The Crown corporation has told
the district that it does not current-
ly consider the project a high pri-
ority.

The area being considered for
the beautification project includes
sections of Southborough Drive,
Fairmile Road, Knockmaroon
Road and Eyremount Drive.

Under the municipal affairs
ministry’s transmission line under-
grounding assistance program, a
public utility can pay one-third of
the cost of installing power, tele-
phone and other overhead
transmission lines underground.

But in a letter to West Van-
couver council, Dennis Maniago,
metro west area manager for B.C.
Hydro, said the district's grant
application has been turned down
because the utility company has
other higher priority projects.

“B.C. Hydro’s funds were
limited to projects having a gross
cost of not more than $3 million,
and we had to make difficult
choices since we received applica-

province in excess of $7 million,”’
wrote Maniago. ‘Projects were
seiected on the basis of maximizing
benefit to B.C. Hydro.

The highest priority projects,
according to Maniago, were those
that avoided significant
maintenance or renewal costs and
those that assisted in upgrading
systems from one operating volt-
age to another.

He added that lower priority
projects included those that had
“‘mainly esthetic value.””

But not all West Vancouver
council members were happy with
Hydro’s grant application rejec-
tion.

“This is extremely disappointing
news. We worked on this for 1'4-
years,’’ said Ald. Mark Sager, who
added that Hydro should have ap-
proved the grant application
