Michael Priest of New

inaccuracies, distortions and lies.”

paganda was winning out over the
truth, which was.that our little
Marxist couple;were obviously
party to the kidnapping of a
Brazilian businessman, Abilio
Diniz. “

They sere terrorists. But they
made the mistake of being caught
ina country that didn’t take kindly
to terrorism. Hence their sentence
of 28 years.

Passports and were caught in the
house where the kidnapped man

: was held. Spencer had helped to

-build the prisoner's “cell” and had

stood guard over him with a gun.
They were nabbed when the

» police raided the place. But of

course they knew nothing. They |

“just happened to be passing by,

sort of thing. Later, documents

* found in a terrorist bunker in
“Nicaragua linked them with a big-

lime, left-wing kidna »pping ring..

released was highly orchestrated.
Before the last federal election all

“unison for them. Mike Harcourt
put his oar in. The press poured
out acres of sympathetic print.

“one politician ever stood firm.

The other author, Vincent, has
written an article in Sanirday
Night. Let's hope Dr. Priest reads
it because it shows just what
Lamont and Spencer were up to.
And it is scathing on the slanted
coverage the case has received in
Canada,

The CBC's vaunted Sth Estate
sent Victor Majarek down to
Brazil, he being their star “inves-
tigative reporter.”

As Vincent puts it, “The pro-
ducers went overboard in their
attempt to portray Christine and
David as innocent, idealistic
Canadians who had no idea that
Diniz was being held in an under-

_ ground cell in their house.”

The place was seen as “a way
station for Latin American

Lamont and Spencer were “heroes,
appointed by the Divine.”

“Guilty in the eyes of the gov-
ernor, but Christine and David
have God on their side.” Vincent
quotes Malarek as saying, in echo-
ing the words of a bishop.

Kim Bolan of The Vancouver
Sun also comes in for some hard
kicks.

“Bolan was instrumental in
turning the case into a cause cele-
bre... She wrote a vivid account
of Christine's agony in San Paulo
without ever visiting the jail’

Later she did visit it, and laid
things on thick once again,

In fact, states Vincent, Lamont
and Spencer are privileged.
Christine’s cell is clean and well
lit, lt includes toilet and shower
and a small desk unit, plus plenty
of books and magazines. Her door
is locked only at night, She has the
services of the best dentist in the
district. paid for by her parents.
Also a private doctor.

And here’s a really tasty bit:
she doesn’t want to exchange her
Brazilian prison for one in
Canada. What she has heard about
Canadian prisons puts her off.

It was a nice story while it last-
ed, says author Vincent of the
Canadian reporting.

But not all of us are naive.
Trevor Lautens was never sucked
in. Nor was Don Hunter of the

Province nor B.C. Report, Maybe
