flippin’ fast from the

music factory. The plas-
tic trend replaces the “best
of” career-stretching option.
It’s also an efficient way to
clear the cross-over way for
musicians seeking the ears of
new listeners.

Oh dash the cynicism — the
pop world is awash with mutual
respect. Why can’t musicians he
fans too? -

Way through You Make Me Feel
So Free. Liam “Schindler the list-
maker” Neeson talks his way
through Coney Island. The totality
of the talent registers well on the
cool-o-meter: Marianne Faithfull,
Hot House Flowers, Elvis Costello,
Casandra Wilson.

The nagging question remains:
Why bother?

Seek out the source for the grit.
The Glory Of Gershwin,
Mercury/PolyGram 1994

The songs of George and Ira
Gershwin are recycled for a gener-
ation or two in celebration of the
80th birthday of harmonica great
Larry Adler. He and the Gershwins
were lifetime pals, hence the sub-
ject of the compilation. Adler con-
tributes throughout. George Martin
produces with finesse. There are
some worthy tracks where the
meeting of tune and interpreter is
a happy one. For example it’s
good to see Cher remaining so
flexible. She joins less odious
company for a sultry cover of It
Ain‘t Necessarily So. Kate Bush
sounds convincingly of the era
with The Man { Love. Oddly, one

of the best tracks is Meat Loaf as
Mr. Vulnerable on Somebody
Loves Me.

The disc is grandly capped by
George Martin and orchestra front-
ed by Adler warbling harmonica-
wise on Rhapsody In Blue.

if | Were A Carpenter, A&M
Records 1994

| love the subversive attitude of
this project. The cuddly cover art
cartoon drawing of Karen and
Richard Carpenter with stricken
eyes popping out half the size of
their heads is just right. Inside
there are panels of unbearably
tight frental face photos. Richard
and Karen, with androgynous
good looks, too heaithy gums and
frighteningly perfect toothy smiles.
And then there’s the music, the
insipid el stinko hits that held such
a chokehold upon the pop charts
before Karen’s darker side prema-
turely dispatched her beyond the
top of the world.

Given all of this, Shonen Knife
does a killer Top Of The World,
Sonic Youth thrills with Superstar
and | like Babes In Toyland doing
Calling Occupants Of
Interplanetary Craft.
