Modine floating face down in the
ocean, rather like William Holden
in Sunset Blvd. (except that Gloria
Swanson wasn’t tastefully posed
nude on the rocks). Jennifer Grey
is, however. Why? Who knows?
And the balance of the movie
takes style over substance every
stroke of the way.

Modine is Will Parker, the hot-
shot sailor who pushes too hard to
win. Grey is Kate Bass, the brains
behind their successful partner-
ship, k keeping his over-eagemess in

publicized events surrounding the
eal loss of the America’s Cup,
even non-sports fans know the
outcome. Fortunately, at least half
the cast is interesting to watch.

debut, that Carroll Ballard hit the
jackpot.

Based on Walter Farley’s famous
children’s novel, the first half con-
cerns a shipwrecked boy (Kelly
Reno} taming a wild, black steed
ona desert island 2fter the horse
saves his life.

The second half, the rescue and
return to civilization, should have
been anti-climatic. But with
Mickey Rooney as a grizzled horse
trainer with an eye for winners,
and the inevitable down-to-the-
wire race, there are thrills aplenty.
Aclassic and not just for kids.
