But Cate Veneto is definitely an inspiring destination for those enamoured of good food, stylishly presented and expertly served, and for alt those North Shore resi- dents who might list themselves in the Bruce Milligan fan club. In the process of retooling its wine fist to focus exclusively on ttalian selections the night Table Hopping paid a visit, Cate Veneto offered a temporary three-dimen- sional wine list format. But the selection was intriguing nonetheless. And both Milligan and Barros provided learned guidance through the Valpolicellas, Chiantss, Grumellos and Barolos offered. We tried. for example, a rich 1985 Mast Camporionn ($28), a big full-blooded Italian red wine that | would highly recommend. ta the astute hands af Barras, we sampled a Cate Veneto antipasto $6.25): an inspired selection of lamb chaps, finely sticed veal, beet, spicy Italian sausage and chicken stuted with apples. It also included delicious smok- ed salmon and griivd halibut. The meats were decorated with black olives, large stemmed capers, tried eggplant. sliced zuc- chint and sun-dried tomatoes, Add olive oil, a sprinkling of herbs and a penerous dusting of cracked black pepper from Bar- ross ever-present peppermull ang you have a mint italian feast Main entrees were equally entic- ing, though not quite so wide- ranging as the preliminaries. Tiger Prawns with tomato: Campar sauce and black olives ($15.50) sounded good, as did the Rack of Lamb Veneto with quatro herbs and grappa sauce ($15.95). But bE settled Gn Veal and Prawns with oregano and sun-dried tomatoes. The Milligan touches were ev- erywhere, My prawns were wrap- ped tightly in thin slices of veal mined with black peppercorns and suffused with delicate garlic undertones, A grand supporting cast includ- ed asparagus spears, tried garlic, beets, zucchini and baked onion. All was arranged with style and shill. Throughout the meal fresh bread was delivered, wine poured, dishes renewed and requests fulfilled with seamless grace by Cate Veneto floor staif headed by Barros.
