Public get opportunity
to view Vancouver courts

THE VANCOUVER courts are
opening their doors to the public
this weekend for Law Day °90.

The event will include mock
trials, displays and live pres-
ententations,

And on Saturday, April 2!,

from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m., the Van-
couver provincial courthouse at
222 Main St. will hold an open
house — the first time a provincial
court has done so.

There will be tours of the regis-
try, prison cell blocks and sheriff
vehicles as well as displays of
community and legal services and a
surprise asrest and trial.

On Sunday, April 22, from Li
am. io ++ p.m., the Vancouver
Law Courts at Hornby and Nelson
will aiso hold an open house,
focusing on the theme of the law’s
role in protecting the environment.

The law courts will feature live
presentations and mock trials as
well as an Earth Day display ex-
amining how the legel system can
effectively respond to environmen-
tal concerns.

Mock trials will include a youth
raised to adult court in Double
Trouble and an extortion and at-
tempted arson case in which the
audience will be asked to act as
jurors.

For people considering a career
in the justice system, there will also
be an opportunity to talk to court-

house staff, a lawyer, an RCMP
officer and probation and parole

officers.
