7 ~ Friday, October 20, 1989 - Nerth Shore News MAILBOX Where is affordabie housing, Ald. Clark? Dear Editor: In the Sept. 27 issue of the North Shore News, North Van- couver District Alderman Craig Clark was quoted as fearing his “children might not be able to af- ford housing on the North Shore”’ unless the level parts of Lynn Canyon Park are sold for high-cost housing. He implies that this wili magical- ly generate affordable housing elsewhere. This is nonsense. Only 30 per cent of the ‘‘two yellow (residential) blotches” in the park is owned by the district. The rest is owned by the Greater Vancouver Water District. This means that only $30 million would be realized by cashing in this ir- replaceable asset. The district is almost unique in having vast amounts of land which it sells ‘‘for public good.’”? The ongoing Braemar-Dempsey tand sales are expected to bring in $40 million alone. This must mean, by Ald. Clark’s argument, that North Vancouver District has more facili- ties and much lower taxes than any other municipality. In fact, we have roughly the same facilities and high taxes. Where is the new affordable housing? Ald. Clark’s children will manage somehow. I am not confi- dent about affordable housing for other young people and seniors. f he were sincere, he would push for affordable housing in council, rather than pushing for monster housing in the park. All we can expect for sacrificing the ‘“‘two yellow blotches’’ in Lyan Canyon Park for housing is higher taxes and more traffic. C. Brace Edwards North Vancouver ‘Thank the Lord’ for locai Christian camp Dear Editor: I am writing in response to the letter about Keats Camp that ap- peared in your paper Sept. 15. Our children have been attend- ing various camps at Keats for a number of years. Our eldest is hoping to go again this fall to what will be his ninth camp. Keats has always been very direct in its advertising that it is a Bible-based Christian camp. They try to bring the Bible with all its teachings to the campers in a beautiful ocean-side setting. I don’t understand how any verses in the Bible can be called obscure; each one is there to be read and studied and Keats en- courages all the children to do just that. As for fear, if you find the thought of an eternity without the love of God fearful, may I suggest some Bible reading to find the an- swer? Our children will continue to at- tend Keats Camp and to love every opportunity they have to be there, and I thank the Lord. Allan and Carolyn Winter North Vancouver ‘Truths of the Bible’ taught at Keats Camp Dear Editor: As a mother of three children I would like to respond to the anon- ymous letter about Keats Camp. Our children have attended Keats for six years. Each year we have experienced the joy of our children coming home thrilled with their camping experience at Keats. After reading the letter publish- ed in the News, all of our children responded with, ‘‘Mom, this isn’t true, our counsellors have never scared us.” Seymour Books | is celebrating the publication of Carmanah Artistic Visions of an Ancient Rainforest Come meet two of the artists Mark Hobson & Don Li-Leger and have your copy signed Saturday, Oct. 21st, 2:00 P.M. - 3:00 P.M. May I suggest that energies of this parent be directed to other areas in our society that daily bombard her children with subtle destructive forces far greater than the challenge of Christ’s teachings which ultimately could only bring good to her children?
