Sidewalk irks NVD A LYNN Valley resident is upset over the short notice given Mour- tain Highway residents by North Vancouver District for a $110,000 Project to install sidewalks along the east side of Mcuntain Highway from 18th to 24th streets. Otto Wetzimayr said he got only three days’ notice that the project would start July 17. - Residents, he said, should be provided with far greater warning time and a better idea of what im- pact such projects will have on them and their properties. The sidewalk installation will, for example, require the removal of some trees from a grove of 18 hemlock that front on Wetzlmayr’s property and provide it with an arboreal buffer zone from the busy Mountain Highway thoroughfare. Initially Wetzlmayr said he was going to chain himself to the trees to prevent their removal, but district staff, responding to Wetzlmayr’s concerns, have since said only those trees that could threaten public safety following the sidewalk installation will be removed: vm te District director of engineering services John Bremner said ex- cavation for the project would br- ing the: sidewalk to within one foot of son::: of the trees, which are on district property, and render their survival dubious at best. “But we appreciate his con- cern,’’ Bremner said. The chowders were judged on quality project | resident have to be removed will be minimized. The district, Bremner said, normally gives residents at least ‘seven days notice for roadwork projects, but notifications for the Mountain Highway project were sent out late. North Vancouver District Ald. Emie Crist, who has campaigned for more sidewalks along district streets, said the addition of side- walks along Mountain Highway will make the street both nicer looking and safer for pedestrians. ‘Mountain Highway is a major thoroughfare,’’ Crist said. ‘‘It should have sidewalks on both sides.”” But while he is not opposed to the sidewalk prcject, Weizlmayr said sidewalks alone will not make Mountain Highway safe. He said commuters who use the road regularly exceed speed limits and viclate other street bylaws. The district, he said, should focus its resources on policing Mountain Highway and making the street itself safer.
