Protect
local
trees

Dear Editor:

Well done to Lena Warrington
for her attempt to protect trees on
city property from the ignorance
of developers.

It appears lack of coordination
and will on the part of the city
engineering department has allow-
ed. our city streets to become
denuded of trees, just because it is
easier to remove them than to
leave them standing.

Each time I see an old tree evi-
denced only by a newly-sawn
stump, I feel a stab of guilt that we
are denying future generations the
opportunity to live ‘among trees.
We cannot easily conceive how
Vancouver looked with tall trees —
Staniey Park is only a glimpse.

Obviously trees had to be cut
down to make way for the city, but
is it now not time for us on the
North Shore to think twice before
we cause so radical a change to our
environment?

Should we not allow a commit-
tee of citizens to decide whether it
is in our common interest that our
healthy older trees, particularly in
locations that do not impede de-
velopment, be felled? Should the
big older trees not be allowed trial
by jury rather than autocratic fell-
ing by property owners and devel-
opers whose main motive may be
dollar profit?

Perhaps we are long overdue in
recognizing the standing value of
our big trees, and the dignity they
bring to the area.
