Traveliing credit See Page 50 43 - Sunday, April 9, 1989 — Nerth Shore News Special events honor efforts of volunteers A CENTURY ago the birth of a child, putting on a new roof or digging a well were all occasions for a neighbor to drop by and lend a hand. As economic, environmental and individual concerns become more complex the need for volunteers has steadily increased. Many Canadians, in fact 70 per cent of our population, donate their time, energy and skills to organizations, individuals and community projects. April 9 to April !5 is Volunteer Recognition Week. The week provides all of us with an opportunity to thank the people who throughout the year have provided support to those in need. The North Shore Information and Volunteer Centre is promoting volunteers and their work in many ways. The centre has asked the ’ three North Shore mayors to pro- claim Volunteer Week. Each will receive a large proclamation to hang in their municipal halls. A special show will be hosted on Shaw cable featuring community volunteers. To honor the volun- teers at the centre, there will be an informal luncheon April 11. Many other organizations, due to their dedicated and industrious volunteer coordinators, have plan- ned events for their volunteers. For example, the Lions Gate Hospital Auxiliary recently hosted a provin- ciai conference for Candy Stripers, students whe volunteer in hospi- tals. On April 13 the West Van. According to volunteer coordinator Lynne Bogardus, their 450 volunteers provided 32,000 hours of service in 1988. On April 14 Cedarview Lodge volunteer coordinator Marianne Pfister has organized a volunteer tea wiih a special cake and pres- entation of five and 10-year pins. On the same day, according to volunteer coordinator Eunice Krus, the North Shore private hospital is having tea for its 90 volunteers with cake and sand- wiches made by the staff. At the Canadian Mental Health Assccia- tion a luncheon for both volun- teers and clients will be arranged. Small tokens of appreciation will be given to the volunteers. The clients have all submitted items on “My favorite volunteer’? to their newsletter, Writers Cramp. Later in the season the Silver Harbour Centre will be having a June Tea for their volunteers. The Deep Cove/Dollarton Community Association will be having a party in May as well as a Christmas potluck in December. Alice Hargreaves, executive direc- tor of Capilano Services reports that they are planning a summer barbecue as well as the annual Christmas event. The Seniors Hub, cocrdinated by Jean Taylor of the Capilano Community Services, sends birth- day and Christmas cards to all their volunteers. This is merely a sampling of organizations that honor and show appreciation to volunteers throughout the year. You will recognize volunteers during this week. They will be wearing red ‘V’ ribbons. Talk to these volunteers about their con- tributions to the quality of our communities and lives and thank them for sharing their energy and talents.
