It requires proper application of weed-killers, insecticides and fungicides (if fungus is a problem in your area). Herbicides (weed-killers) gener- ally are most effective if used when broadleaved lawn weeds are grow- ing actively (usually mid to late spring). They work by making the weeds ‘‘grow themselves to death.’” Fungicides should be applied at the first signs of a problem. Fungus is not easy to control — especially if the disease gets out of hand. In al! cases, always follow the manufacturer’s directions; the company has gone to a lot of trouble to determine -- for you — the most effective way to use its products. And don’t make the mistake of thinking that, “‘if a little is good, a Iot must be better.’’ Plenty of lawns — shrubs, flowers and vegetables, too — have been badly damaged because of that reason- ing. Grass, being a living, growing plant, needs fertilizing like any- thing else you grow. Inadequate feeding is the cause of more lawn problems than any other factor. When grass is fed properly for vigorous growth, it makes such a thick mat that it leaves no room for weeds to get started. Healthy gtass resists disease and insect damage. A rule of thumb is to feed your lawn four times during the growing season. A most effective way to feed your lawn is to use a com- plete, soluole lawn food. This gives you a ‘‘double-barrel- ed” feeding. The solution which remains on the grass blades is ab- sorbed quickly and goes to wark in seconds. The balance penetrates the soil to the roots, which absorb it. Subsequent rain — or sprinkling in the absence of rain — carries some of the nutrient solution down to the deeper roots.
