THE DREAM came true for the North Shore Metros as they won the Canadian under-16 girls’ soccer championships in Ottawa with three straight wins Thanksgiving weekend. The Metros became the first North Shore girls’ team ever to win a national title by beating Lakeshore of Quebec !-0 in the final with midfielder Sophie Spilborgh’s long, high drive. The North Shore team complete- ly dominated the first 45 minutes, but Quebec had some great oppor- tunities in an even second half and goalkeeper Christine Corben need- ed to be in the right spot to keep them off the scoreboard. The B.C. champions edged Sherwood Park, Alta, 4-2 in the opening round as consistent pressure led to a 2-0 halftime lead with both goals coming from left winger Tiffany Chester. Alberta charged back to tie it midway through the last half but Spilborgh’s lofty leftfooter with two minutes to go dropped in behind the keeper and became the winner. Striker Lisa Eastman then scored on a breakaway pass from Chester with 15 seconds left. St. John’s, Nfld., was no match for North Shore in the second round as the Metros rang up a 9-1 triumph that began with striker Catherine Pickup’s breakaway goal four minutes into the contest. Then Chester scored five con- secutive goals — the last two on headers — before the half ended, several on superb crosses from right winger Julie Westerman. Two second-half tallies by striker Kim Wallace and one by midfielder Jennifer Gardiner wrapped up the winners’ scoring before St. John’s scored again.
